Description

The line on which this tunnel is located was originally part of the Marietta & Cincinnati RR (1851-1887), later the B&O (1887-1973), Chessie Systems (1973-1980), and finally CSX (1980-present). The tunnel itself stood just outside of a small town called Moonville, founded sometime in the late 1850s, and finally abandoned in 1947. Based on what I've been able to find, 1856 is about when the land grants needed to lay track though here were acquired, and subsequently when the railroad came to the area.

Tracks were pulled up in 1989, if I recall correctly, as well as the metal elements of the nearby trestles, which makes getting to this spot somewhat tricky.

Interesting title.

Is this a 'rail-to-trail' sort of thing now, or is there just a road there for maintenance vehicles and the like?
